AT A GLANCE

What are wet high-intensity magnetic separators used for?

A wet high-intensity magnetic separator, or WHIMS, separates suitably responsive weakly magnetic particles from slurry. High-gradient designs use a matrix to create strong local field gradients in the separation zone.

How it works

Particles respond to the magnetic field and its gradient while the slurry passes through the separator. Matrix design, field conditions, feed preparation and washing influence capture and release. WHIMS and HGMS terminology should be checked against the supplier's actual configuration.

When to consider it

Consider high-intensity wet separation when laboratory testing shows a useful contrast in magnetic response and a viable grade-recovery balance. Potential duties include selected iron-ore and industrial-mineral applications.

Application limits to check

Not every weakly magnetic feed is economically separable. Oversize, locked minerals, matrix blockage and unsuitable slurry conditions can limit results. Do not use a field-intensity number as a substitute for mineral testing.

Selection data for a useful quotation

These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.

Compare the complete duty

Compare WHIMS/HGMS with wet low-intensity drums using the mineral's response. Compare alternative high-intensity designs under equivalent feed and washing conditions; a higher field alone does not prove a better product.

Before accepting a supplier proposal

  • Review a test report that includes product grades and mass balance.
  • Confirm matrix-cleaning access and protection against oversize or tramp material.
  • List cooling, wash-water, control and critical-spares requirements.

Buyer questions about wet high-intensity magnetic separators

Are WHIMS and HGMS identical?

They overlap in use, but describe different aspects of magnetic intensity and gradient. Ask the supplier to explain the field and matrix configuration.

Can it replace flotation?

Only where the mineral properties and test results support the required separation. Flotation and magnetic separation exploit different properties.

Why is washing part of selection?

Washing helps control retained material and gangue carryover. Its flow and quality affect the product and site water balance.
