What are wet drum magnetic separators used for?
A wet drum magnetic separator recovers strongly magnetic particles from slurry using a magnetic field inside a rotating drum. Magnetite processing and suitable dense-medium recovery duties are common application contexts.
How it works
Magnetic particles are attracted toward the drum and carried out of the slurry separation zone, while less magnetic material follows another path. Drum arrangement, magnetic circuit, feed distribution and slurry conditions affect the result.
When to consider it
Consider wet low-intensity separation when testing confirms that the target particles are sufficiently magnetic and liberated. Specify whether the duty is concentration, scavenging or recovery of a magnetic process medium.
Application limits to check
Weakly magnetic minerals may require a higher-intensity technology. Fine locked particles and entrained gangue can affect concentrate quality. Field strength alone does not define separation performance.
Selection data for a useful quotation
These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Mineral response | Magnetic susceptibility, liberation and test results |
| Feed slurry | Solids rate, volumetric flow and concentration |
| Size envelope | Top size, fines fraction and distribution |
| Separation duty | Recovery target, concentrate quality and stage position |
| Magnetic arrangement | Drum configuration, field specification and test basis |
| Plant scope | Launders, wash water, liners, drive and access |
Compare the complete duty
Wet low-intensity drum separation targets strongly magnetic material. WHIMS or HGMS can address different, weaker magnetic responses. Use mineral testing to distinguish the duties rather than choosing only the highest advertised field.
Before accepting a supplier proposal
- Request grade and recovery evidence for representative feed.
- Confirm drum wear protection, sealing and feed-distribution details.
- Define stream sampling and the basis used for magnetic-field reporting.
Buyer questions about wet drum magnetic separators
Can it recover all iron minerals?
No. Iron-bearing minerals have different magnetic responses. Mineral identification and testing determine the suitable separation technology.
Is wet separation the same as a dry magnetic pulley?
No. The feed conditions and separation arrangements differ. This page concerns slurry-fed wet drum equipment.
Is a stronger field always better?
Higher attraction can change both recovery and gangue entrainment. The correct field and configuration depend on the grade-recovery objective.
