What are hydrocyclones used for?
A hydrocyclone classifies particles in a slurry using a pressure-driven swirling flow. It is commonly used in closed grinding circuits, desliming and other duties that require a controlled separation between streams.
How it works
Slurry enters tangentially and forms a vortex. Particle size, density and fluid behavior influence whether material reports to the overflow or underflow. A hydrocyclone has no filter cloth and its separation is not an exact sieve opening.
When to consider it
Consider hydrocyclones for continuous slurry classification when the process has sufficient pumping pressure and a defined cut-size objective. State the desired overflow and underflow qualities alongside the feed rate.
Application limits to check
A change in solids concentration, pressure or ore density can shift the separation. Roping, excess water split and wear can affect the circuit. A cyclone cannot be selected from pipe diameter alone.
Selection data for a useful quotation
These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Feed slurry | Volumetric flow, solids concentration and solids density |
| Particle data | Full size distribution, mineral densities and target cut |
| Operating pressure | Available pressure and expected variation |
| Stream targets | Overflow size, underflow density and acceptable bypass |
| Wear and chemistry | Abrasion, pH, temperature and liner compatibility |
| Cluster layout | Operating units, standby provision, valves and access |
Compare the complete duty
Compare a cyclone with a spiral classifier by cut target, footprint, power and water balance. Density effects make cyclone separation different from screening; a screen may be preferable when an aperture-based split is essential.
Before accepting a supplier proposal
- Review the predicted size partition and water split at the stated feed conditions.
- Confirm apex and vortex-finder options, pressure measurement and sampling access.
- Include interchangeable wear parts and a plan for changing ore conditions.
Buyer questions about hydrocyclones
Is a hydrocyclone a filter?
No. It separates slurry streams through fluid motion and particle behavior, without a filter medium.
Why does feed pressure matter?
Pressure helps establish the flow pattern. The selected cyclone must operate within its design range, with a pump and controls that can support it.
Can one cyclone setting suit every ore?
Usually the feed variation needs review. Changes in density, size distribution and solids content can require operating or hardware adjustments.
