AT A GLANCE

What are slurry pumps used for?

A slurry pump moves a mixture of liquid and solids through a process system. Selection must account for the slurry's effect on hydraulic performance, wear, sealing and suction conditions.

How it works

In a centrifugal slurry pump, an impeller transfers energy to the mixture and the casing directs it into the discharge. The duty point is determined by the pump and system together. Clean-water curves require appropriate interpretation for slurry service.

When to consider it

Use a slurry-pump enquiry for mill circuits, cyclone feed, thickener underflow or other defined transfer duties. Provide a system layout and operating range so the supplier can select the pump, drive and wet-end materials.

Application limits to check

Viscous or high-yield-stress slurry, large particles and insufficient suction head can constrain centrifugal pumping. A bigger motor does not solve every system problem. Abrasion and corrosion require a material-specific review.

Selection data for a useful quotation

These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.

Compare the complete duty

Compare metal and elastomer wet ends for particle size, abrasion, chemistry and temperature. Compare centrifugal and positive-displacement options where the rheology or pressure duty requires a different approach.

Before accepting a supplier proposal

  • Review the selected operating range, efficiency basis and slurry corrections.
  • Check suction conditions, seal-water needs and dry-running protection.
  • Include performance curves, materials, critical spares and alignment instructions.

Buyer questions about slurry pumps

Can a water pump handle mining slurry?

Some light duties may be possible, but abrasive solids and sealing needs often require a purpose-selected slurry pump. Evaluate the actual mixture.

What is NPSH used for?

It helps assess suction conditions and cavitation risk. The system's available suction head must be compared with the pump requirement using the agreed design basis.

Why provide a piping layout?

Pipe length, diameter, fittings, elevation and solids behavior determine system resistance and influence the operating point.
