What are jaw crushers used for?
A jaw crusher reduces large rock by compression between a fixed jaw and a moving jaw. It is commonly selected for primary crushing ahead of secondary crushers and mineral-processing circuits.
How it works
The moving jaw opens to admit feed and closes to fracture it. Product size depends on the discharge setting, feed characteristics and circuit arrangement. A feed opening alone does not establish throughput: fines, moisture, rock strength and the full size distribution also matter.
When to consider it
Consider a jaw crusher when the plant receives coarse run-of-mine rock and needs a controlled feed for a cone crusher or grinding circuit. Provide representative feed data rather than only the largest lump.
Application limits to check
Very sticky feed can obstruct flow. A jaw crusher is not a substitute for fine grinding, and its discharge normally needs downstream screening or further crushing.
Selection data for a useful quotation
These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Feed envelope | Maximum lump, size distribution and bulk density |
| Rock properties | Compressive strength, abrasiveness, moisture and clay |
| Production duty | Required dry tonnes per hour and operating hours |
| Product target | Discharge setting, target top size and downstream duty |
| Installation | Feed chute, foundation, maintenance access and lifting space |
| Utilities | Site voltage, frequency, altitude and dust-control scope |
Compare the complete duty
Choose between jaw and impact crushing by rock properties and the required product, not purchase price alone. Abrasive hard-rock duties often favor compression; an impactor may suit a different shape target with a different wear-parts budget.
Before accepting a supplier proposal
- Agree a representative feed and sampling method for any production test.
- Check jaw plates, bearing arrangements, guarding and a documented maintenance procedure.
- List commissioning support, first-change wear parts and foundation loads in the supply scope.
Buyer questions about jaw crushers
What feed size can a jaw crusher accept?
It depends on the selected feed opening and the actual feed distribution. Ask the supplier to state the permissible top size and the proportion of oversize used in its selection.
Can one jaw crusher make finished aggregate?
Sometimes a limited product is possible, but graded products usually require screening and additional crushing. Define the finished sieve specification before choosing the circuit.
How should capacity be compared?
Compare quotations at the same rock properties, feed grading, discharge setting and operating hours. A catalogue maximum is not a project guarantee.
