AT A GLANCE

What are cone crushers used for?

A cone crusher compresses rock between a mantle and a concave liner. It commonly performs secondary or tertiary crushing after a primary crusher in hard-rock and aggregate circuits.

How it works

An eccentric motion changes the crushing gap around the chamber. Chamber geometry, feed distribution and the closed-side setting influence the output. The surrounding screen and recirculating load are part of the sizing problem, not optional details.

When to consider it

Use a cone-crusher enquiry for a reasonably controlled feed where staged reduction is needed. Supply the upstream crusher product and the finished grading, including the amount returned from the screen.

Application limits to check

Tramp metal, unsuitable feed grading and uneven feed can damage equipment or accelerate wear. A protection system does not remove the need for feed control and the manufacturer's operating limits.

Selection data for a useful quotation

These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.

Compare the complete duty

A cone crusher reduces by compression; an impact crusher uses impact. Compare wear consumption, product shape, feed tolerance and downstream screening for the actual ore. Neither machine is universally the better secondary crusher.

Before accepting a supplier proposal

  • Request the selected chamber profile and the assumptions supporting it.
  • Verify lubrication, alarms, overload protection and safe liner-change access.
  • Define liner supply, commissioning settings and the acceptance sampling point.

Buyer questions about cone crushers

Is a cone crusher a primary crusher?

Most enquiries concern secondary or tertiary stages after coarse primary crushing. Confirm the manufacturer's permitted feed before using any cone model in a different duty.

Why does screen return matter?

Returned oversize increases the load through the crusher. Sizing only for fresh feed can understate the actual duty.

Does a smaller setting always improve output?

A smaller setting changes the product and can constrain capacity or increase load. Selection must balance grading, power, liner conditions and the permitted operating envelope.
