What are dewatering screens used for?
A dewatering screen uses vibration and a suitable screen surface to drain water from a bed of solids. It is considered for prepared sand, mineral and tailings streams where testing supports the required product condition.
How it works
Vibration transports and compacts the solids bed while free water passes through openings. Feed grading, bed depth, media and motion affect the discharged material. The recovered water may still contain fines that need further treatment.
When to consider it
Consider a dewatering screen downstream of appropriate classification or washing when the solids form a drainable bed. Specify the allowable moisture and fines loss, together with the condition at the actual discharge point.
Application limits to check
A screen does not thermally dry material or automatically replace a filter press for fine slimes. Clay-rich or very fine feed may not drain to the desired condition without another process.
Selection data for a useful quotation
These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Feed solids | Particle-size distribution, top size, clay and density |
| Feed water | Slurry concentration, volumetric flow and variability |
| Product | Required handling condition, moisture and fines retention |
| Screen surface | Aperture, open area, material and panel fastening |
| Mechanical duty | Vibration arrangement, supports and dynamic loads |
| Water handling | Underflow collection, recycle and fines recovery |
Compare the complete duty
A dewatering screen drains a solids bed; a filter press forms a cake under pressure. A hydrocyclone may prepare the screen feed but produces slurry streams rather than a mechanically drained product.
Before accepting a supplier proposal
- Request a trial or test basis for moisture and retained fines.
- Review panel wear, vibration isolation and access to the discharge.
- Confirm the treatment of drainage water and recovered fine solids.
Buyer questions about dewatering screens
Will the output be completely dry?
No. Mechanical drainage leaves residual moisture. Agree a tested moisture or handling target rather than using the word dry without a definition.
Can it treat fine tailings?
Suitability depends on the grading, clay and required condition. Very fine or poorly draining material may require filtration or other treatment.
Where should moisture be sampled?
Define the sampling location and delay after discharge, because drainage and handling can change the measured condition.
