What are rod mills used for?
A rod mill uses long steel rods as grinding media. It is considered for relatively coarse grinding duties where the circuit and material benefit from controlling the production of excessive fines.
How it works
Rods tumble inside a rotating shell and contact the feed along their length. Product characteristics depend on ore behavior, feed distribution, rod loading and discharge arrangement. The tendency to limit fines must be evaluated for the specific material, not assumed as a guaranteed result.
When to consider it
Consider a rod mill before gravity concentration or another process requiring a defined, relatively coarse product. Supply the whole feed-size envelope and the acceptable fines fraction, not just an average size.
Application limits to check
Rod loading, allowable feed and shell geometry impose design constraints. A rod mill should not be selected as a universal replacement for fine ball milling, and irregular operation can affect media behavior.

Does a rod mill eliminate fines?

Can rods and balls be exchanged freely?
No. Media choice is part of the mill design, loading and operating envelope. Any conversion requires the manufacturer's engineering review.
What should a gravity circuit specify?
Provide the liberation target, feed size and allowable slimes or fines, together with the downstream separator's feed requirements.
