What are jig concentrators used for?
A jig concentrator separates particles through repeated water pulsation that promotes density stratification. It is a gravity-separation option when the valuable mineral is liberated and has a useful density contrast with the gangue.
How it works
Pulsing water expands and settles a particle bed. Size, shape, density, bed conditions and pulse settings all influence stratification. Feed preparation is therefore as important as the jig's nominal treatment rate.
When to consider it
Consider jigging for a tested coarse or intermediate gravity duty, including suitable mineral or alluvial feeds. Ask for test results across the actual size fractions and ore variability.
Application limits to check
Fine slimes, poor liberation or a small density contrast can constrain separation. Recovery of one mineral or feed size cannot be generalized to every ore. Water and concentrate handling must be included.
Selection data for a useful quotation
These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Mineral properties | Valuable and gangue densities, liberation and shape |
| Feed grading | Top size, size fractions, slimes and preparation |
| Treatment duty | Dry solids rate and feed consistency |
| Test targets | Recovery, concentrate grade and mass pull |
| Water circuit | Available flow, quality and recycle conditions |
| Installation | Bed arrangement, discharge, access and wear parts |
Compare the complete duty
Jigs, spirals, tables and centrifugal concentrators address different feed envelopes. Compare actual size-by-size recovery and water needs rather than treating all gravity equipment as interchangeable.
Before accepting a supplier proposal
- Review representative test samples and size-by-size product analysis.
- Confirm pulse controls, bed materials and concentrate-discharge arrangement.
- Agree the water balance, sampling plan and handling of middlings.
Buyer questions about jig concentrators
Can a jig recover locked minerals?
Gravity separation depends on the properties of the whole particle. If valuable minerals remain locked in gangue, further liberation may be needed.
Does jigging use reagents?
Its basic separation mechanism is physical density stratification. The complete process may still require water treatment or other preparation.
Should feed be classified first?
A controlled size range can improve predictability. Testing should establish the appropriate preparation for the selected jig and ore.
