What are dth drill rigs used for?
A surface down-the-hole, or DTH, drill rig uses a hammer near the drill bit to transmit percussion into rock. It is considered for suitable quarry and surface-mine drilling duties with a matched air and drill-string system.
How it works
Compressed air powers the down-hole hammer while the rig provides rotation, feed and positioning. Hammer, bit, drill pipe and compressor must be compatible. Site altitude and drilling conditions affect the air-system selection.
When to consider it
Consider a DTH rig when the drilling study defines the rock, hole geometry and required production. Discuss mobility, access, dust management and maintenance support for the actual terrain and work schedule.
Application limits to check
Hole diameter and depth ranges are model-specific. Fractured ground, water and difficult access can change the appropriate method. This sourcing guide does not replace an approved drilling plan or operator training.
Selection data for a useful quotation
These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.
| Input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Drilling duty | Hole diameter, depth, angle and production schedule |
| Rock and ground | Strength, fracture conditions, water and variability |
| Air system | Hammer demand, compressor flow and pressure at site altitude |
| Rig configuration | Integrated or separate compressor, rod handling and mobility |
| Site | Terrain, access, ambient temperature and dust-control requirements |
| Support | Bits, hammers, pipes, service tools and operator training |
Compare the complete duty
Compare DTH, top-hammer and rotary options against rock conditions, hole geometry and the site's drilling study. A larger compressor or engine does not by itself establish a better drilling outcome.
Before accepting a supplier proposal
- Verify compatibility across the rig, hammer, bit, pipes and compressor.
- Review guarding, dust collection, cab provisions and maintenance access.
- Confirm shipment dimensions, initial consumables and local service arrangements.
Buyer questions about dth drill rigs
Does every DTH rig include a compressor?
No. Some rigs integrate one; others need a separate unit. Ask for the air-system scope and its rating at the site conditions.
Why does altitude matter?
Air-system and engine performance can change with altitude. Provide the actual site elevation for supplier selection.
Can one hammer cover every hole size?
No. Hammer, bit, pipe and compressor selection must match the intended hole and the manufacturer's compatibility requirements.
