High-pressure grinding rolls

High-pressure grinding rolls, or HPGR, reduce particles by compressing a material bed between two rolls.

INDUSTRY / APPLICATION CONTEXT
AT A GLANCE

What are high-pressure grinding rolls used for?

High-pressure grinding rolls, or HPGR, reduce particles by compressing a material bed between two rolls. They can form part of a crushing or grinding circuit where ore testing supports the application.

How it works

Feed is drawn into the roll gap and subjected to pressure as a bed of particles. Roll surfaces, operating pressure, feed distribution and moisture influence performance. The resulting product may need screening, deagglomeration or further grinding.

When to consider it

Consider HPGR when comparing comminution circuits or investigating a defined bottleneck. Ask for testing on representative material and a flow sheet that includes feed preparation and product handling.

Application limits to check

Energy or recovery benefits depend on the ore and complete circuit. Uneven feeding, unsuitable moisture and tramp material require explicit controls. A vendor's result for another ore is not a transferable guarantee.

Selection data for a useful quotation

These are enquiry inputs, not specifications of a single model. Include measured values, units and the expected operating range; flag anything still to be tested.

Compare the complete duty

Compare HPGR with SAG or conventional crushing and milling using total circuit energy, wear, availability and product targets. Include ancillary drives and recirculation in the comparison, not only the roll drive.

Before accepting a supplier proposal

  • Review test conditions and how they represent the mine plan.
  • Confirm feed-control, edge effects, wear measurement and roll-change arrangements.
  • Set acceptance criteria at the agreed feed and circuit conditions.

Buyer questions about high-pressure grinding rolls

Does HPGR always save energy?

No universal saving applies. Compare tested circuits at the same feed, throughput and final product size, including auxiliary equipment.

Can HPGR replace a ball mill directly?

It may change the grinding duty, but whether it replaces a stage depends on the required product and the complete flow sheet.

Why is uniform feed important?

Stable distribution across the rolls supports consistent operation and wear behavior. The feed-bin and control design belong in the supply review.
