Use a controlled drawing revision
Make the drawing number and revision visible. If a 3D model and a 2D drawing differ, define which governs the quotation and production requirements.
Specify more than the shape
- Material grade and any acceptable alternatives
- Critical tolerances, fits, surface finish and edge conditions
- Heat treatment, coatings and cosmetic requirements
- Batch quantity, expected repeat volume and packaging
Define inspection expectations
Identify critical characteristics and the required inspection report. Sampling, first-article review and material documentation should be agreed before production.
Compare like-for-like quotations
Check whether tooling, fixtures, finishing, inspection, freight and taxes are included. An apparently lower unit price can reflect a different technical or commercial scope.
Protect project information
Introduce the requirement first. Agree confidentiality and file exchange arrangements before sending sensitive drawings or proprietary process information.
